9 Reasons Why You Should Take a Working Holiday

Do you want to travel the world but still make money? Well, a working holiday might be the perfect solution for you.

Here are 9 reasons why you should consider taking one.

1. Travel

If you work overseas, you will be based in another country. This means you can travel domestically within it and to other nations nearby.

For instance, if you head to Europe or Asia, there are around 50 countries and territories you can hop to at weekends or in between bouts of employment.

Most of them are easy to get to via flight, train or ferry, and depending on what role you are doing, you might be able to ‘work from home’ while you visit them.

2. Gain International Work Experience

There is no question that working overseas will look mightily impressive on your resume and may even help you to stand out from other candidates.

Employers love candidates who show adaptability and a willingness to work in different environments. They should also recognise that you would have overcome cultural and language barriers and also show resilience in facing other challenges (which you should elaborate on in your resume).

3. Live Like a Local

Generally speaking, tourists only scratch the surface of what a country has to offer. However, if you are living and working in a new destination for a prolonged period, you’ll get a deeper appreciation of what life is really like there.

For instance, you can visit places that are off the tourist trail, attend cultural events and festivals, and even possibly pick up some of the language. All of which will add to the experience.

4. You can stay for longer

The great thing about a working holiday is that you can stay in a country for much longer than you otherwise would if you were a tourist.

For instance, in the UK, you can stay up to five years, while in Australia, your visa can be issued for up to three years.

This gives you plenty of time to really enjoy the destination you want to visit and make the most of your time there.

5. Grow as a person

Moving to a new country can take you out of your comfort zone, which is a good thing because this is a surefire way to develop as a person.

During your time overseas, you’ll have to negotiate things like finding a job and somewhere to live, cooking and cleaning, living with other people, budgeting and paying bills and making friends.

You might have your ups and downs along the way, but you will become more resourceful, confident, and adaptable overall.

6. More Freedom

At some point in your life, particularly when weddings, mortgages and kids come along, you’ll probably need to settle down to a ‘proper’ job routine. However, until then, a working holiday gives you a sense of freedom you may never have again.

Whilst overseas, you don’t have to work full-time, instead, you can do temping, short-term or part-time roles that will enable you to make some money while also giving you plenty of time to do the things you enjoy doing, such as travel or going out.

7. Meet New People

During a working holiday, you will meet lots of people. This could be during your employment, within shared accommodation, in clubs or groups you join or just socially.

These people will be from different backgrounds and ages, which should introduce you to new cultures and open your mind to different ways of thinking.

The law of averages suggests that some of them will even become good friends. And who knows, one of them might even be the guy or girl of your dreams!

8. Discover New Career Paths

One of the best things about a working holiday is that it can provide you with a stepping stone to launch a whole new career.

For instance, by trying out different jobs whilst abroad, you might discover a passion for teaching, hospitality, or environmental work that you hadn’t considered before.

You never know; you might even find your calling!

9. You can save money

Although the purpose of a working holiday is to have fun, it does provide you with an excellent opportunity to save money for later in life.

This is particularly true if you move to a country with a very cheap cost of living or one with a very favourable exchange rate to where you’ll eventually be moving back to.

You just need to be disciplined enough to put some money aside every payday.
