The Youth Mobility Scheme Visa for Working Holidays explained

Youth Mobility Scheme visa blog

If you’re thinking about living and working in the UK, you’ll want some information about visas. The visa situation for any country is always a tricky prospect to figure out. There are often so many different options that working out which one for you can be a real headache.

Luckily, there’s one very convenient visa for working in the UK that’s ideal for many prospective travellers to the country – the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa. If you’re only just hearing of this you might be wondering what the heck it is. Or, if you have heard of it and want more details (never a bad thing, right), then you’ve come to the right place.

What is the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa?

The Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa is essentially a working holiday visa for those aged 18 to 30. It’s open to people who want to live and work in the UK and is available to those from a number of different countries on a reciprocal basis. If your country also offers this scheme to Brits, the likelihood is that you’ll also be able to go to the UK.

Who is eligible?

Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Monaco, and San Marino are currently the countries that are eligible to apply for the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa. Each country is allocated a certain number of slots per year that applicants can apply for (usually in the thousands).

If you’re from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea, or Japan, you’ll also be eligible for the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa. However, you’ll need to be selected by the Youth Mobility Scheme Ballot before you apply. Other than that, they’re the same.

How much does it cost?

The Youth Mobility Scheme Visa costs 244 GBP. But that’s not the only cost you need to consider for this particular visa.

You’ll also have to pay a healthcare surcharge as part of the application. This is 470 GBP for each year you’ll be staying in the UK – you pay this online during your application for the visa. By paying this surcharge you’ll be covered by the NHS for healthcare for the duration of your stay.

Anybody that applies for this scheme must have at least 2,530 GBP in your bank account before you apply for it. This just shows that you are able to safely support yourself in the UK. This money needs to have been in your account for at least 28 consecutive days. You’ll obviously need to show proof of this when you do apply.

How to apply

To apply for the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa, you simply apply online from outside the country via the UK government website. You’ll need to make an appointment to go to a visa application center too (for fingerprinting and photographing).

The process will be made easier if you apply for a job before travelling to the UK. There are many schemes that offer this sort of service, but none more comprehensive (and fun) than UK Pub Co which offers you the chance of living and working in a pub. Going strong since 1997, we’ve helped thousands of applicants through the process from visa to arrival and beyond.
