Top 10 Excuses That Stop You From Moving Abroad (And How to Overcome Them)
Moving overseas to work, even if just for 6 months, can feel daunting and scary if you don’t know where to start. Luckily, we’re here to help you tackle each and every one of those hesitations and excuses that hold you back from taking the leap. We believe, more than anyone else, that going on a UK working holiday is the best decision you’ll make this year, so let’s work through those pesky excuses together.
EXCUSE #1: “I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START!”
We’re starting with this one because, well, it’s the one we hear most often. For far too long now, energetic and curious young Australians, Kiwis, and Canadians have held themselves back from living their dreams of world travel, all because they don’t know where to begin.
Do I need a visa? How do I apply for one? Which visa do I apply for? Which airport should I fly into? How do taxes work in the UK? Do I have to pay taxes at home, too? Do I need travel insurance? How will I find a job? Will I need employment or tenancy references?
The questions you might be asking yourself can start to feel endless, and if you’ve got nobody to help you find the answers you seek, it’s easy to give up on the idea of a UK working-holiday altogether.
That’s where WE come in! Our staff are just as enthusiastic about travel as you are, but we’ve all done it before. In addition to having first-hand experience living and working abroad, the UK Pub Co. has specialized in the arrangement of UK live-in pub jobs for more than 18 years. We’ve got relationships with more than 600 pub and hotel employers, and we can help you every step of the way, from sorting your job and accommodation, to setting up your bank account, to assisting you with your visa application, and more.
EXCUSE #2: “I’M WORRIED ABOUT TRAVELLING ALONE!”
Travelling with a friend or partner is awesome, but if you’re thinking about going solo, don’t be nervous! One of the best things about our live-in Pub Job Program is the reality that you’ll be arriving at a pub full of other young world travellers who are, just like you, off on their own UK gaps years.
In most cases, our pubs will set you up with twin-shared accommodation, so you’ll be assigned to a shared room with another member of pub staff (always same sex). Most pubs have at least 4-6 full time staff members living on-site, but some are even larger than that, housing upwards of 10 friendly travellers. In short, you’ll be making friends before you’v even unpacked your bags!
EXCUSE #3: “WHAT IF MY VISA APPLICATION GETS REJECTED?”
It’s a valid worry. An immigration application for any country needs to be taken seriously, and completed accurately, or you may risk your application being rejected. The other downside is that, if your application is rejected, you don’t get your application fee back! What a bummer!
To eliminate this problem, we guide all of our travellers through the UK visa application process personally. In addition, if you feel you need some extra assistance with your visa application, we can hook you up with our visa partners at Restless World. Their visa application assistance services are super affordable, and you can sit back and relax while your Visa Guru handles the application for you. This way, you know your application will be completed correctly and accurately the first time through.
EXCUSE #4: “THE UK IS TOO EXPENSIVE!”
Under most circumstances, this is entirely true. The UK is one of the world’s most expensive countries, on the whole. And if you find yourself in a big city like London, expect rental rates and food costs to go up even more.
This is where our UK Pub Job Program really starts to shine. A live-in pub job is, by far, the cheapest way that you can live in the UK. FACT. You’ll be earning a great wage, working full time hours, all within days of arriving in the UK. On top of that, the average accommodation deduction is around £35GBP per person, per week – that’s £5GBP per night. Good luck finding accommodation for less than that! And bills are included too!
If that weren’t enough, you’ll also have access to all the amenities you need (kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, wifi), and most pubs offer meal discounts for staff members, driving your weekly cost of living even lower.
If you want to dive deeper into living costs in the UK, check out our COMPARE THE COSTS page for a full breakdown of living costs in a live-in pub job vs any other hospitality jobs in the UK (typically, live-out).
EXCUSE #5: “I PROBABLY WON’T EARN ENOUGH MONEY TO GET BY!”
Not true! We only work with the best pubs in the UK! Each and every job that we arrange will provide you with the potential to earn between £250G-£325GBP per week, before taxes and deductions (based on working 40 hours per week). You can also expect to earn tips on top of your wages!
After all of your deductions are paid, that’s rent, taxes, and National Insurance, you’ll have plenty left over for your weekly food/grocery budget, money to spend on your days off, and even money to save for bigger trips/travel later on. Or, just save up and take some money home?
Who says you can’t travel the world and make money while you do it?
EXCUSE #6: “FINDING A JOB IN THE UK IS GOING TO BE TOO HARD!”
It’s a common concern, and with unemployment rates soaring in the UK, we don’t blame you for being worried about your employment prospects. All the more reason to have assistance when heading overseas.
One of the best things about our company is the reality that we’ve been in the pub job game for 18 years. We’ve built amazing relationships with some of the UK’s premiere pub chains, and quite simply, our pub managers want to hire you. As a traveller, you bring a fresh energy with you to the UK, and this energy makes you an ideal member of staff for a pub.
Live-in pub jobs sit in a bit of a niche market, and quite often, our pubs don’t even post their vacancies publicly, so we can always guarantee placement opportunities for our travellers, no matter what time of year you plan to arrive.
EXCUSE #7: “I DON’T KNOW HOW I’LL FIND A PLACE TO LIVE!”
One of the hardest parts of setting yourself up in the UK is jumping all the necessary hoops when looking for live-out accommodation. Take a city like London, for example. Firstly, rental rates are incredibly high! Even in a shared room, in a shared house, you’re likely to pay at least £90GBP per week in rent (remember, our live-in pub jobs offer accommodation for only £35GBP per week, bills included).
If you can navigate the many Gumtree listing scams, and manage to find a suitable room to rent, you’re next hoop to jump will involve a request for 3 years of UK tenancy references. We’re going to go out on a limb and guess that you won’t have any UK tenancy references at all!
With our UK Pub Job Programme, this isn’t a problem at all! You won’t need tenancy references, and there are no expensive move in bonds or deposits to pay either. You just arrive at the pub, spend a day or two settling in, and start work! Simple as that!
EXCUSE #8: “WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG?”
It’s normal to feel a bit worried about all those “what ifs” swirling around in your head, but this one is pretty easy to manage!
First up, don’t leave home without health insurance. We’ll help you tackle this in two ways. Firstly, the UK recently implemented a UK Health Surcharge that is payable when you apply for your visa, though, citizens of Australia and New Zealand are exempt from this. Either way, what this means is that you’ll have UK health coverage once you’re set up and working, as well as paying your regular NI deductions. We also recommend that you opt for additional travel insurance from a reputable provider, and we’ve got partnerships with the likes of Aussie Travel Cover and World Nomads to take care of all your travel insurance needs.
Secondly, we’ve got an office in the UK, and a contact line that you can call should you ever need urgent assistance. We stay in touch with you for the duration of your stay in the UK, so if ever you should need help, we’re only a phone call or an email away!
EXCUSE #9: “I DON’T WANT TO MISS OUT ON ANYTHING AT HOME WHILE I’M GONE!”
Once you’re off seeing the world, this one won’t feel so bad anymore. The truth is, home never changes that much, and home will always be there waiting for your return. You might feel a little homesick from time to time, and that’s totally normal, but always remember that your friends and family will be the ones feeling like they’re missing out, so don’t let that fear stop you from doing amazing things in life! The stories, memories, and friendships you come home with will make it all worth while!
EXCUSE #10: “THESE WORKING HOLIDAY COMPANIES ARE ALL SCAMS!”
Though we’re proud to say that not too many people think this of us, the sentiment is out there, so we thought we’d tackle it head on! As you start to research in preparation for your UK working holiday experience, you will no doubt encounter people who tell you to save your money and do it all yourself. If you think this route is best for you, that’s totally fine (and we’re still happy to answer any questions you have and provide advice where possible).
The reality we encounter every day is that there are more and more aspiring travellers ending up in the UK without a job, without a place to live, and they’re finding out very quickly that the cost of spending time in the UK without income and affordable accommodation hits your bank account like a wrecking ball with Miley Cirus on top.
